4 Songs You Can Paso Doble To

The paso doble is a theatrical, serious, and dramatic dance. It's inspired by the music played at Spanish bullfights, with the leader playing the part of the matador and the follower playing the part of the matador's cape or the bull. Paso doble is typically danced to a speed of 60-62 measures (120-124 beats) per minute.

Paso doble has a 2/4 time signature. Its songs are often variations of España Cañi (the first item on our list below), and will have breaks or "highlights" in the music in fixed positions in the song. Paso doble routines will be choreographed around the music and its phrases, with dancers typically striking a dramatic, powerful pose during the highlights in the music.

Due to its theatrical nature and unique music, paso doble is rarely danced at social events, since it is difficult to follow the music without a pre-choreographed routine. It is instead most often danced at ballroom dance competitions and performances such as Dancing with the Stars.

When selecting a song to dance paso doble, "España Cañi" and "Spanish Gypsy Dance" are the most common choices, and one of these two songs will almost always be played in competitions. However, several ballroom DJs have remixed other popular songs to follow the unique timing and highlights of paso doble, such as the Pirates of the Caribbean and ABBA examples we've included in our list below.
