The room has framed pictures on the wall, stage lights hanging from the ceiling, and a woman sitting on a chair.

We offer artistic, thorough dance instruction for adults who aim for excellence. In our adult ballroom dancing classes, our instructors teach a variety of both ballroom and Latin dances including Salsa, Bachata, Swing, Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Viennese Waltz, Cha Cha, Jive, Samba, Rumba, and Paso Doble. We focus on the unique technique of each dance style.

The genre of ballroom dance is unique, as it is the only form of dance which contains a true lead and follow relationship between two individuals. Because of that, ballroom and Latin dance are taught in a combination of formats including adult group classes as well as both private individual and couples dance lessons. Learn to dance in a friendly atmosphere, where staff and students alike are eager to help.

Areté Dance Center takes pride in our unique and comprehensive system to turn anyone into a dancer, step-by-step. Inspired by the teachings of Walter Laird and Ray Rivers and our own coaches, Dima and Olga Sukachov, we'll guide you through the fundamental building blocks of dance technique and musicality. Whether you want to dance socially or competitively, the system is the same. All experience levels are welcome!

All group ballroom dancing classes and private lessons are taught in our dance studio located in Los Altos, so that it's convenient for students located in Los Altos Hills, Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Redwood City, Atherton, and San Jose.

Private lessons can be taught in English, Russian, or Spanish.

Getting Started with Ballroom Dance

New ballroom dance students at all experience levels must register for the Intro to Ballroom Series. This dance class addresses the vital theory of how to learn ballroom dance and puts everyone on the same page so that classes may move forward evenly. Intro is taken as a “series” of 4 once-weekly classes that build on each other.

Our Introduction to Ballroom Series focuses on four dances: Waltz, Foxtrot, Cha Cha, and Swing (two of these dances are taught each month). Pre-registration is required!

Private Ballroom Dance Lessons

Private ballroom dance lessons are one-on-one sessions between an instructor and either a single dance student or a couple. One to two dance lessons per week are recommended to make sure students progress smoothly. Learning through private dance lessons is essential and increases a student’s rate of learning by at least FIVE times!
